RITES OF PASSAGE
imagines a mythical context for understanding death. The
six figures in the picture respond differently to the overhead movement
approaching them. Two figures raise weapons (spear, bow and arrow) and defy
the movement, fearing the unknown. Two figures make music (drum,
didgeridoo), responding creatively to the unknown. The final two figures
have simply reached for leaves and allowed the movement to carry them where
it will, surrendering to the unknown, and so are outside the vision-clouding
smoke of the fire below. The six figures were drawn from models I created
using dried vine roots. It took four years to find all the proper pieces,
with each figure composed of a dozen glued parts.
